F-1 international students are required to hold health insurance during identified terms while completing their studies at Elmhurst University. Students are automatically enrolled in the school sponsored plan offered by ISO* when enrolled in courses or living on-campus for the duration of their academic program in the U.S.
The insurance requirement is in place for all international students in the Fall and Spring semesters, as well as required for any student that is either enrolled in courses or living on-campus during Summer semesters.
Short-Term Health Insurance, may be an option during periods of transition. Short-term health insurance has limitations to coverage and does not cover pre-existing conditions.

For Illinois residents: Beginning January 1st, 2025, short term insurance plans are banned in Illinois. Comprehensive coverage is available through healthcare.gov. The open enrollment period for healthcare.gov is November 1st through December 15th for a January 1st effective date or December 15th through January 15th for a February 1st effective date. The LAST DAY to enroll in comprehensive coverage through healthcare.gov for 2025 is January 15th, 2025. Certain qualifying life events may allow you to enroll at a later time but loss of a short-term insurance plan is not considered a qualifying life event.

*This coverage is not required to comply with certain federal market requirements for medical insurance, principally those contained in the Affordable Care Act. Be sure to check your Policy/Certificate carefully to make sure you are aware of any exclusions or limitations regarding coverage of preexisting conditions or health benefits (such as hospitalization, emergency services, maternity care, preventative care, prescription drugs, and mental health and substance use disorder services.)
Open enrollment for ACA plans is November 1 – January 15.
You may qualify for a Special Enrollment Period to enroll outside of this window if you’ve had certain life events, including losing health coverage, moving, getting married, having a baby, or adopting a child. Please refer to our FAQ page for more information on qualifying life events.
